Talofa lava / Greetings!
My name is JP / Jason Pereira. I am a storyteller and cultural bearer in the shape of an Artist. My practice is rooted in service, love, and respect for our communities. Born and raised here in Los Angeles, unceded land of the indigenous Tongva peoples, my family ascends from the Pacific island of Tutuila, American Samoa.
As a visual artist, I generate works that help tell stories and shape identities of the people and communities that call on me to create. Cultural Art, Graffiti Art and Graphic Design inform my artistry and approach. The art I create is expressed through murals, paintings, weavings, and mixed media 3D works. They are rich in storytelling, as they're multi-layered and multi-dimensional.
When creating artwork for our communities, listening and empathy are my greatest assets. When I learn their stories, I imagine myself in their position, I try to understand experiences from their perspective. From there I look for my own connections. What part of my life's journey speaks to theirs? Do I see a kinship? A relationship? A common bond. Once that's discovered, I create. As I begin, I'm also connecting with our natural world - water and ocean, forest and mountain, light and sky, including the spaces in between. All of these layers of stories and dimensions are interwoven into the artworks. They are reflections of reciprocity for our communities - an indigenous practice that I carry throughout my artistry.
